Whenever someone asks me the simple question of, “How do I give my character more depth?” my universal answer is nearly always, “Give them a friend.” This is even more so my answer when it comes to female characters. Why? Because there is a long list of epic tales of manly friendship, but a very short one for women and other women. Here are a few great ones that offer a lot of depth to the characters off the top of my head: Daria and Jane (Daria), Annie and Lillian (Bridesmaids), and Xena and Gabrielle (Xena: Warrior Princess). Did you notice something about that last one? Was it the lesbian undertones?
